Sugar Cookies

February 23, 2011 By Sara

Back when I was in high school I was in FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America) and every Valentine’s Day we did a fund raising event where we would make heart shaped cookies and students could buy them for themselves or for that special someone.  Our teacher, Ms. W had this great cookie recipe that we would use and I thought I’d share it with you!  Enjoy!

Sugar Cookie Ingredients
4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. shortening
1 2/3 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 c. sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla

In a large bowl, mix:
4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt

In a mixer, cream:
1 c. shortening
1 2/3 c. sugar
2 eggs

Then add:
1 c. sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla

Add flour mixture a little at a time until all mixed together.

Chill dough for at least four hours or overnight.
Here is my cute little helper!
Take half the dough and work in a little more flour to make it easier to roll out.

Make sure that you keep the counter covered in flour, it will make it easier to transfer them from the counter to the cookie sheet!

Cut out your favorite shape.  I just did round ones since I only had Christmas, Halloween and baby cookie cutters!

Transfer the cookies to a floured cookie sheet (notice my supervisor in the background).  Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Sugar Cookie Frosting
My frosting recipe was passed down from my Aunt D who is a great baker.  This frosting recipe was just the right amount for this batch of cookies.
Bring to a boil over low heat:
3 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. evaporated milk
Remove from heat and add:
1 stick (1/2 c.) butter, diced
3 t. vanilla
Transfer to a mixing bowl and turn mixer on low to help the mixture cool slightly.  Then add enough powdered sugar to make a nice spreading (I didn’t quite use all of the 2 lbs. bag of powdered sugar).  You can also add food coloring if you would like.  We were going for red, but decided that the hot pink would work too!  Once you frost them, let them dry for a few minutes.  Enjoy!

Haha! That’s funny! It’s a good one! Especially with the delicious frosting! 🙂
