My Garden

May 10, 2011 By Sara

Oh, what have I gotten myself into!  I’ve never had a garden before and this year I decided to give it a try.  I’ve been told that a garden has never done well on top of our hill, but what the heck, I thought I’d give it a try anyway!

I casually mentioned to my husband yesterday that I wanted to get started on my garden and that I needed his help moving a few things.  So all of a sudden yesterday evening he got a place cleared and said his dad was on his way to till it up for me so I needed to figure out how big I wanted it.

How big?  I have no clue!  My mother-in-law said it can get big real fast and I didn’t want anything that I couldn’t handle for my first year.  So I mowed a spot to mark where I wanted it to be and my father-in-law started tilling away.  Kevin even brought him a couple of loads of manure so it should be nice and fertile ground!

Well, I’m not sure if it’s a “big” garden or not.  I guess I’ll see once I get everything planted.  Kevin suggested planting sweet corn along the south side of the garden to help as a wind break.  So I’ll give that a try.  We (as in me and HD) are going to plant some tomato plants, green beans, sweet corn, a few different kinds of peppers and squash and maybe some carrots and onions too!  I’ll just have to see what looks good when I go buy some plants/seeds.

I’m hoping the weather and HD cooperate this week, as I would like to spend a few evenings getting it all planted.  I’ll post some more pictures when I’m done and keep you up-to-date as to how it is going!  Wish me luck!

I have a little backyard garden, and I love it. Really makes me appreciate how difficult it is to grow food. I’ve found the easiest veggies to grow are green beans and cucumbers, followed by tomatoes and peppers, depending on the July weather. It’s a great project for little kids!
