Wind Storm

July 11, 2011 By Sara

About 1:30 this morning I was woken up to what sounded like my roof was going to blow off.  I grabbed HD who was sleeping soundly in his crib and headed to the basement.  We stayed down there for about a half hour then went back to bed.  Luckily HD never woke up at all!
At 6:00 this morning I woke up because I was hot.  I found out that our electricity was out and that caused our air conditioner to stop working.  I made the call to the power company and when I went outside to check things out, I saw they were already working down the road.  We had power back right after that.
Heading outside, this is what I found….

Out back on our deck, most of the furniture had blown off.  Wind behaves so strangely sometimes.  Notice how all the heavier furniture was blown around, but HD little plastic trike is still in the exact same spot.

Another weird thing is that this water bottle is still in the same spot as I forgot it last week.

And the little metal buckets with candles in them are still in the exact same spots on the deck.  But not the furniture!

Next I walked over to my garden.  It’s not a pretty sight!  The two rows of sweet corn are pretty much flattened.

My squash plants were looking pretty bad too.

Kevin said to just give it a few days and hopefully it will spring back up.  So we’ll see!

I did see that I had a few yellow squash ready to be picked!  Guess what we are having for a vegetable for dinner tonight!!!

Next I went and checked on the cattle.  Since Kevin was gone this morning, I headed over to make sure they were still all in their fences and had water.  Everyone was doing well.

All of the calves were hanging out together.  It was a hot and humid day yesterday and it’s going to be just as bad today.  So we want to make sure they have plenty of water to drink.

After I checked the cows, I went to look at our corn.  For the most part it doesn’t look too bad.  Some of the rows on the edges got hit with the 70 mph winds pretty bad, but it should be ok.

After checking on everything I went and found that we had gotten 1.5 inches of rain last night!  They are forecasting strong storms again tonight, but I’m really hoping we don’t have a repeat!

Did you have strong storms where you live?  How do you gardens look?  Have you starting picking any produce from it yet?
