German Chocolate Bars

August 28, 2011 By Sara

Boy, has it been a busy couple of weeks.  I don’t really even know where to start!  This weekend Kevin and I were in Des Moines for the Iowa Corn Growers Annual Meeting and Policy Conference.  This was the start of Kevin’s one year term as the President of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.  But more about that later!

When we got home today, Kevin went golfing with his cousin and some friends and then they were going to come out to our house afterwards for dinner.  He asked me if I would make the German chocolate bars for dessert.  His mom has been making them for a long time and they are one of his favorites!  It’s also really close to what I called “Chocolate Revel Bars” that my friend, Angie’s mom made when we were little.  They were soooo yummy!  Anyways, here’s Kevin’s German Chocolate Bar recipe:
Ingredients
1 box of German chocolate cake mix
3/4 cup melted butter
2/3 cup evaporated milk (divided)
1 cup chopped nuts
14 ounces or 40 pieces of caramels
6 ounces of chocolate chips

Directions
Grease a 9×13 pan and set aside.
Mix cake mix and butter together is a large bowl.

Add 1/3 cup of evaporated milk.  Mix well

Place 2/3 of the batter in the pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Melt caramels and 1/3 cup of the evaporated milk.

Spread in the pan.

Place the rest of the cake mix on top in clumps.

Sprinkle with chocolate chips.

Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Enjoy!!!
