The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has officially reversed language which would have excluded high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) from canned fruits and vegetables for the school lunch program; the earlier USDA language only allowed non corn-based sugar sweeteners to be used in canned food for school lunches, but did not reduce overall amount of sugar in the foods. Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) does not encourage more sugar in children’s diets, but supports equal treatment for all sugars as USDA has acknowledged there is no nutritional difference between corn sweetener and sucrose. Corn Growers worked with USDA officials to reverse this decision. For additional information, please see the USDA links for canned vegetables, frozen fruit, and canned fruit.
