New York City-Day 4 of 4

December 26, 2011 By Sara

Our last day in NYC was a busy one!  For starters, we actually got to sleep in that morning (until 6:30am)! My sister Megan and I took the rental van back first thing and then we decided to walk back to the hotel instead of taking a taxi, since we had time and it was a really nice morning out!
By the time we got back and got ready it was time to head down to Battery Park to get on the boat to visit the Statue of Liberty.

With Starbucks in hand, we took the subway downtown.

We bought our tickets and then got in line for the boat.  It was such a beautiful morning.  We really couldn’t have asked for better weather for the middle of November while we were there in NYC!

When we got to the Statue of Liberty we walked all the way around the island and got a lot of pictures.

Afterwards we boarded the ship over to Ellis Island and walked around there for a little while.

We found some relatives that were listed on the wall below that had come through Ellis Island when they arrived in America all those years ago.  It was crazy to imagine what they had to go through and endure to start their new lives here in the US.

Next, we headed back to Manhattan and made our way past Ground Zero.  Since we missed our time to go on the previous Thursday due to flight cancellations, we only got to walk around the outside.  You really can’t see much from there since they have a fence up all around it.

Across the street from Ground Zero is a fire station with a beautiful tribute on their wall.

From there we headed up to Little Italy for lunch at Lombardi’s Pizza.  It is America’s first pizzeria and it is delicious!!!  After lunch we still had a few hours to kill before we headed to the airport, so we hopped back on the subway and rode it up to Rockefeller Center. We got in line at Magnolia’s Bakery for a yummy cupcake.  Then we went to check out the progress on the famous Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center.  It was upright and had a ton of scaffolding around it so it could be decorated.  It was just massive!

There were quite a few people ice skating in the rink below.

After that we headed back to our hotel to get our luggage and made our way to the airport for our direct flight home.  It was on time, so we made it home by 10:30pm that night!

What a fun trip with great friends!  I love the Big Apple and can’t wait to go back!
