Calving has began on our farm! We’ve had three healthy calves so far, but many more are due in the next few weeks. Kevin will be checking on them around the clock to ensure the momma cows aren’t having any troubles calving. If he sees one that needs his assistance he will get her into the barn and then usually help pull the calf. Last year, our cows didn’t need much assistance at all, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that will be the case again this year!
The weather forecast for the next 10 days is anywhere fro 37-55 with a few chances of rain/snow this weekend. We’ll make sure the cattle have plenty of dry stock bales to lay on and to keep their babies warm.
This is what a cattle rancher waits for all year long, so we want to make sure that the cows and calves are properly taken care of. If one needs some extra help, Kevin will be there no matter what time of the day or night it is.
Usually after a calf is born, the momma cow cleans it off and the calf will then get up and start nursing right away. This all usually happens within an hour of birth. Kevin also tries to put an ear tag on a calf right away too. This can be hard sometimes because momma cows are usually pretty protective of their little calves. An ear tag is just like an earring on a human and helps us identify the calf as he or she grows up.
So these next few weeks, we’ll be seeing a lot of baby calves being born! It’s an exciting time of the year on our farm! More pictures to come of the cute baby calves…..
