Showing Livestock at our County Fair

July 29, 2013 By Sara

This past week was our county fair, Westfair.  Over the past few days, 4-H kids showed their livestock and were judged in many different classes.  At the end of the livestock shows on Sunday afternoon, any little kid that wanted to lead a calf around the ring with the help of an older kid in 4-H could.  We thought HD might like to try it.  It took a look coaxing, but he warmed up real quick to a family friend, James and his bull calf.

HD wanted to pet the bull calf and then he let him sniff his hand and promptly got slobber all over!

Then they took off for the show ring!  HD held James’ hand with one hand and the end of the rope with the other.  They walked the calf around the ring just like the big kids do in front of judges.

He did such a good job!  He’s got five more years until he can join 4-H and show his own livestock, but this was good practice!

All the kids received a participation ribbon.

HD says “I won!”

AJ slept through the whole show, but was wide awake afterwards while we walked around the fair.

It was perfect weather this past week for the 4-H kids at Westfair.  I’ve been there when it’s been so hot and humid before.  HD is only three years old now, but it will be here before we know it and he’ll be showing his own livestock at the county fair!

    Hey Sara,

If you don’t want to wait for “big kid” 4-H, HD can join 4-H Clover Kids when he is in kindergarten. You may already know that, but I was in 4-H growing up and Clover Kids had not been started yet back then, so I didn’t even know about it until this year. My kids will be in kindergarten and second grade, and we are joining a Clover Kids club for the first time (and so excited we don’t have to wait two more years!). Not sure, but I think they have some form of showing livestock at the county fair, too.

    Mindy
