Thankful for Turkey Famers!

November 27, 2013 By Sara

Hello!  Happy Wednesday aka Thanksgiving Eve.  Are you all busy preparing for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow?  I would be, but first we are throwing a 1st birthday party for AJ tonight with both sides of our family.  So I won’t be thinking about all the food I have to make until tomorrow morning…
Today I want to introduce a good friend of mine.  I met Katie a few years ago when I spoke at a conference she was attending.  I was talking about CommonGround and she was interested in becoming a volunteer.  Katie blogs at On the Banks of Squaw Creek and loves talking about her family, their farm and their 106 year old farm house that they are fixing up.
Katie and her husband, Bart, raise two little boys and turkeys on their family farm in Iowa.  They receive a flock of 20,000 male turkeys (called poults) every nine weeks when they are one day old.
They raise the turkeys inside of heated barns there on their farm.  It takes about 19 and a half weeks to get them ready for market.

At this time they are about 41 pounds.  Now these are not the turkeys that you and I will be eating tomorrow for Thanksgiving.  41 pounds is a little much for that!  Their turkeys are raised and processed for lunch meat for Subway restaurants and also for ground meat that you can buy in stores.  Their turkeys supply meat to all of the Subways west of the Mississippi River!

Even though tomorrow is a holiday and most people have the day off, just remember that there are hard working farmers all across the country that don’t have the day off.  They will be tending to their livestock before and after they sit down for their Thanksgiving meal.

From this farm family, I hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and save travels if you are out and about this holiday weekend!
