Calving During Winter Storm Nika

February 5, 2014 By Sara

For the past several days, they’ve been calling for snow on Tuesday (aka Winter Storm Nika) and strong winds on Wednesday this week.  Well we got it!  We only ended up with a few inches of snow, I think.  It was hard to tell because the wind blew it around so much.  I have 12 inch deep drifts in certain areas and bare spots in others in our yard.  It was pretty miserable yesterday.  Today the wind is blowing, but the sun is out so that helps!
Cattle before the storm.  You can see most of them in the distance taking cover down by the trees.

These calves are all ready for the storm.  They have plenty of hay and bedding to get through the storm.
I’ve talked before about how we prepare for snow storms here and here, but it’s always interesting when you are calving.  We had a few heifers due the beginning of February and three of them have had their calves already.  Just waiting on the last two.  I figured they would have them during the storm, but we made it through it.  Any day now though….

Since there are only two that are due right now, they have access to the barn.  Hopefully they will have their calves inside!

The bulls were covered in snow, but they are very large animals with very thick skin so they can tough out a snow storm with no problem!

Notice Diesel over by the bulls.  He was just stopping by to say hi.

I’m sure all the cattle were happy to see the sun today even if the wind chills were below freezing!

I’ll post pictures of the cute baby calves as soon as they arrive!  Here’s to checking on them every few hours!  It’s kind of like having a newborn again, only you have to get bundled up and head out into the cold to check on them instead of snuggling inside with a warm baby.  Stay warm where ever you are!

We had three of our babies in the January deep freeze at the beginning of the year, and we’ll have one in Feb. hopefully she waits until after Beef Expo. The rest will be in March and April!
