Celebrating National Ag Day 2014 and the Future of Farming

March 26, 2014 By Sara

Happy National Ag Day 2014!  I had the privilege of spending the day with a great group of farm women and CommonGround Iowa volunteers.  We had a great day discussing consumer questions about food, our family farms, and agriculture in general.  It was perfect that it happened to fall on National Ag Day this year.
On my way to our meeting in Ankeny, IA this morning, I got to watch a beautiful sunrise.  It was cloudy at first, but then the sun peeked out and lit up the sky.  It also decided to start snowing at this same moment.  The picture above doesn’t do it justice, but it was a beautiful site.  The rural countryside that was being lit up by this gorgeous sunrise made me feel very blessed to live in Iowa and raise our family on our family farm.

Our sons are the seventh generation to grow up on Kevin’s mom’s family farm in southwest Iowa.  We are very blessed to have the opportunity to farm both his mom’s and his dad’s family farms, which are only about five miles away.  Watching our sons grow up on the farm and seeing them so thrilled to go check cows or go ride in the tractor makes us excited about the future.  We hope to be able to pass the farming way of life down to our children if they so wish someday.  In the meantime, we will do everything we possibly can to make the best farming decisions for our farm so they will have that opportunity someday.

Happy National Ag Day!  If you see a farmer, please thank them for doing what they do on a daily basis, and providing safe, nutritious food for us all to eat!
