Farmland Movie Review

May 8, 2014 By Sara

Last night I had the opportunity to be at the Des Moines movie premier for the new documentary Farmland.  I’ve had the opportunity to see this film before it was released, but I think that the director did an excellent job with this final version!

Farmland tells the story of the next generation of American Farmers.  “Most Americans have never stepped foot on a farm or ranch or even talked to the people who grow and raise the food they eat.  Farmland takes an intimate look at the lives of farmers and ranchers in their ’20s, all of whom are now responsible for running their farming business.

Through this film from award-winning director, James Moll, you’ll step inside the world of farming for a first-hand glimpse into the lives of young farmers and ranchers.  Learn about their high-risk/high-reward jobs and passion for a way of life that has been passed down from generation to generation, yet continues to evolve.

Director James Moll traveled across the country meeting young farmers and ranchers.  Watch the trailer to catch a glimpse of stories shared during his interviews.”

I think that this movie really tells a true and honesty story of what farmers and ranchers have to go through each and every year.  Farming and ranching is a lifestyle, not something that you can just wake up one day and decide to do.  It takes a LOT to get started in farming now-a-days and there is a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, but it’s also a very rewarding occupation knowing that you are providing food, fuel, and fiber for consumers not only in the United States, but around the world too.  Watching these six farmers experiences the highs and lows of their occupations really strikes a cord with you.

To find a theater near you that is showing this film, please visit the Farmland website.  If you see it, let me know what you think!  Have a good day!

This film was made with the generous support of the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance.  Some quotes were taken directly from the Farmland Film website.
