Planning and Planting My Garden Continued…

May 5, 2014 By Sara

Hello!  Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Today I’m going to talk about planning and planting my garden and a few new things that I’m trying this year.  For starters, I was looking for some software to design my garden since I was going to completely rearrange things this year.  I found the website, Mother Earth News, which has a Vegetable Garden Planner.  You can tell it the dimensions of your garden and then pick all the fruits and vegetables that you want to plant.  It tells you how close to plant them and how far to space all the plants/seeds.  It also suggests when to plant them depending on your location.  Below is what my garden is going to look like (hopefully).
The print is really tiny, so here’s a list of what everything is on this picture: From left to right-strawberries, asparagus and herbs, carrots, onions, green beans, edamame, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, zucchini, summer squash, watermelon and pumpkins.

Last Saturday I was able to get the carrots, onions, green beans and edamame planted and then it poured on Sunday.  We received 2.3″ inches of rain really fast.  I’m hoping my carrots come up in straight rows and weren’t flooded and spread all over the garden!  We’ll have to wait and see!

Then on this past Saturday, it was absolutely beautiful outside and hardly any wind, so I set the little plants that we started in the shed outside for the first time.  Then we went to a 50th wedding anniversary in Ankeny, IA that evening and I forgot to put them back inside.  When I work up on Sunday morning I could hear the wind howling and ran over to see where all my little plants were.  The wind blew them all over!  🙁  It took me about half an hour to pick up what I could find and replant them.  A little soil and water and hopefully they will be ok!  (Sorry Jim & Nancy!)

Yesterday I was able to get the green bean trellises finished.  I was wanting to try pole beans this year.  I’ve been told they are much easier on the back than bending over and picking bush beans.  I also wanted to put something in the garden that could entertain the boys for awhile while I weed, so I found some ideas to build tunnels here and here.   It seemed like a good idea and I had the panels that I’ve used for tomato plants in the past that I wasn’t going to use this year so it worked perfectly to build the tunnels.

I got everything wired together and when HD came over to check them out he was very excited to run up and down the tunnels.  I told them the green beans were going to climb up the fence and hopefully cover the tunnels.  He loved it!  The only thing is that I might have planted the row of onions a little too close.  I might have to figure out a little fence or something to make sure him and AJ don’t run over them!

So that’s where I’m at this year so far with the garden.  I’m hoping I can get most of the rest planted either this week one  evening and/or next Saturday.
Are you planting a garden this year?  If so, what’s all in it?  How do you deal with the weeds?

Your garden looks great and I’ll have to check out that garden program. I’ve seen others use it but didn’t know the source. Thanks for linking up your post Sara!
