Good morning! This is the start of a crazy week (which is about normal around here!), so I thought I’d start with an update on our crops since I haven’t done that since last year some time! 🙂
Our spring started out like normal in our area, farmers started getting into the fields mid-April, but then it started raining. Kevin didn’t start planting corn until May 5th and finished on May 15th. He then got all the soybeans in the ground on May 18th and was done planting for the year!
The boys love when the little corn plants start to emerge from the ground. They were using the rows as racing lanes this spring. They ran and ran and ran some more!
After planting, the next step is to have the fields sprayed to kill all the weeds. You can see in the picture below a sprayer driving over one of our fields spraying the weeds. You can also see all the weeds that are starting to pop up.
The corn is still really little at this point and the amount of pesticides is very minimal. Most of what you are seeing coming out of the spray in the picture above is water. Watch the video below to find out how much of it is actually pesticides!
After the planting and then the spraying for weeds, it’s time to hope and pray for rains. We do not irrigate at all on our farm in southwest Iowa for a few reasons. Usually we receive adequate rains throughout the growing season and also, we are really hilly and have lots of terraces, so it would be next to impossible to have pivots moving across our lands!
June 13th started our kid/corn photo sessions to watch them grow! Hudson and Ax think it’s fun to see when the plants get taller than them!
The saying used to be “Knee high by the Forth of July”, but it’s usually closer to our heads by that time as it was this year!
And that’s where we are sitting right now with the crops. Unfortunately I don’t have any soybean pictures this year because they are planted in a far back area that is hard to get to. I’m hoping to get some harvest shots with my drone.
Hope you all have a great week and don’t forget to register to win my cookbook giveaway that goes through tomorrow! Good luck!
