How we met….

March 3, 2012 By Sara

Six years ago from today, Kevin and I met at the Commodity Classic trade show that was being held in Anaheim, CA that year.  Mr. Bob Schultz and I were in our booth talking to the trade show attendees when a nice young guy came over and talked to me.  His name was Lance.  I talked to Lance for a little while when another nice young guy came over to talk to me and his name was Kevin Ross.
Kevin had been asked by Lance’s brother, Tyler, to attend the Commodity Classic conference and trade show to help him network with some of the Corn Growers.  So Kevin told him would and ended up at a booth one row over from where Bob and I were in our Rural Community Insurance Services booth.
That evening I met up with Kevin and a group of Iowa Corn Growers and went to the Iowa, Illinois and Indiana Corn/Soybean Reception with them.  We had a great time talking, dancing and meeting a lot of people.  Afterwards we went to downtown Disney with a group of his friends and took our picture by these Mickey and Minnie shrubs.

The day we met.

That was Friday night.  Then we all got together the next evening too and had a great time.  By Sunday morning I had called my mom and sisters and told them that I had meet the man that I was going to marry.

We were on different flights back to Iowa, but we managed to meet up at the airport and have lunch together.  When Kevin got back home he also told his dad that he met the woman that he was going to marry.  Funny thing is that we didn’t tell each other that!  🙂

At this time (March of 2006) I was living in Des Moines, IA with my sister Megan and Kevin was living in the same house we live in today and was farming near Minden, IA.  He was just getting his feet wet with the Iowa Corn Grower’s Association and was in Des Moines quite a bit for meetings.  When he wasn’t there, I would go visit the farm which was about an hour and a half away.

Six months later, my family was going to go out to California for the Nebraska vs USC football game.  My sisters and I each got to take a friend along with us, so Kevin (even though he dislikes the Huskers) came along on the trip.  We hadn’t really talked about marriage very much, but I was really hoping that maybe he would propose while we were out there since it was where we had met six months earlier.

On the Friday before the football game, we all went to Disneyland and then went over to Downtown Disney that evening because I wanted to take our picture by the Mickey and Minnie shrubs.  I was kind of hoping he would propose there, but I was really hoping we could loose my family before we went over there.  But Kevin’s plans involved my family talking our pictures since he was planning on proposing!

The day he proposed.

Really the only one that didn’t know what was going to happen was my mom.  Kevin had asked my dad for his permission to marry me and he had asked one of my sisters for help getting the ring through the airport security.  And since we can’t keep secrets, one sister told the other.  🙂  And I just had this sneaking suspicion that he was going to propose!

As soon as we took our picture, I was stepping down and away from the shrubs when Kevin grabbed my hand and pulled me back.  Then he got down on one knee and said something to me, but it was all such a blur that I really have no idea what he said other than “Will you marry me?”  Of course I said, “Yes!”

The day we got engaged!
We knew that we wanted a short engagement and I didn’t want to get married in the summer.  So we decided to get married on March 9, 2007, which was one year and six days after we met.  We planned our wedding around farming, calving and the Commodity Classic!
The week/weekend before our wedding we were at the Commodity Classic in Tampa, FL.  When we got home from there, we had five days to take care of all the last minute wedding details.  Our wedding went off without a hitch and a great time was had by all!

Three years later (one day shy of our third anniversary) HD arrived!  He has been such a wonderful addition to our family.  He was such a good little baby and so easy going and is growing up soooooo fast!

One day old!

St. Patty’s Day

Now it’s 2012.  It’s been six years since I met Kevin and next week is Hudson’s second birthday and our five year anniversary!

Not wanting to take his picture with mommy!
As you can tell by my recent posts, we are back at the Commodity Classic.  Since Kevin is President of the Iowa Corn Grower’s Association this year, his duties have become much more time consuming, but it’s worth it.  It brings us to places like the Commodity Classic where we can met up with a lot of our friends in the Ag industry.  It’s been a busy Commodity Classic (Kevin hasn’t left the hotel since we checked in on Tuesday) but a fun one!  Can’t wait for the next one in Kissimmee, FL!
