Doing Chores and Checking on Calves

March 11, 2014 By Sara

Last weekend was such a nice weekend to be outside.  Saturday (which was HD’s birthday) was sunny, but a little cool still.  Kevin had a meeting first thing that morning, so HD and I did chores at our house before meeting Kevin to check on the cows that are just starting to calve.
We loaded up in the pickup and drove around the fields checking on all the cows.  They are still out on the cornstalks until the pastures start greening up.
This calf was born the day before.  Kevin had already tagged it.  We put ear tags in all the new calves to help keep track of when they were born, who their momma is, which bull their momma was breed too, how much they weighed at birth, etc.  A lot of the calves are all black, so without an ear tag it would be hard to keep track of them!
These mommas are getting close.  They should calve within the next few days or so.  In the mean time, they are just hanging out and enjoying the nice sunny weather!

This calf was just born within the hour.  The momma was doing a good job getting him dried off.  We watched him get up and start eating for the first time.  Both boys loved watching the cows and looking for new calves!

Sunday turned out to be even warmer, but also windy.  The boys need to wear off some energy before their naps, so we went outside and played for a little bit.  AJ found every mud puddle and fell into it!  This picture was right after we went outside.  His pants, both front and back, were covered in mud by the time we went inside!

HD loves to run, so he ran from one end of the yard to the other and back again.  Then he ran over to check on the bulls.

I love that it’s starting to warm up.  Hopefully we are getting over all the cold and snow and it will stay nice from here on out!  The boys love being outside and we have a LOT of yard work to do!  Hopefully they like picking up sticks!  I’ll have to make it into a game I think.  I remember when we were little my dad gave $.50 to the daughter who picked the most dandelions!  haha!

Has anyone started on yard work?  Are any of your tulips coming up yet?  Or do you still have a ton of snow on the ground?
